Mary Lou Rosien reveals the not-so-secret spiritual weapon that gives her comfort in difficult situations.
My grandparents had a secret, hidden weapon. My mother has the same weapon. I have also learned to use this weapon effectively and I have taught my children to use it as well. My Concealed Catholic weapon … the Rosary! Okay, it’s not such a secret and it’s often not concealed, but you get the point.
So many things can attack our peace. We can struggle with trials, the culture and many types of difficulties. During these times, I find great comfort in recitation of the Holy Rosary. I recently saw a video of a man explaining to his young son, he should always keep his rosary in his left pant pocket, ready to draw it out at a moments’ notice; warriors used to sheath their swords like that, so that they could withdraw their weapon in haste.
The Rosary has so many spiritual benefits and promises, but I actually find comfort in the more practical aspect of praying it. I have a very busy mind and it’s always racing. I find the repetitive nature of the Rosary helps calm me down and helps me focus. I love that when I feel helpless in a particular situation (especially concerning my children), reciting the Rosary empowers me. It gives me something powerful to grasp onto in my anguish and desperation.
When I am afraid, I pray the Rosary. When I am grateful, I pray the Rosary. When I feel helpless, I pray the Rosary. When my family is in trouble, I pray the Rosary. When I unite myself with Mary, as she walks through Jesus’ life with him, I feel close to her and closer to her Son. I share in her sorrows and joys as she shares in mine. I am never alone when the Blessed Mother walks beside me. She shares her stories of motherhood with me. She holds my hand when I feel so frightened I can’t breathe. She teaches me about her son in a new way and draws me closer to him.
I am so grateful that this beautiful Catholic gift was given to us by St. Dominic. It will always be my secret weapon.
