Maria V. Gallagher discovers a new appreciation for God’s goodness through the EWTN+ series Seeking Beauty.

I have just returned from a virtual pilgrimage to Italy, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The tour came courtesy of the new EWTN+ series Seeking BeautyFor those of us without the means for an actual trip to Italy, this series allows us to enjoy the wonders of that special land from the comfy confines of our couches.

Breathtakingly Beautiful

The docuseries is breathtakingly beautiful, exploring the aesthetic riches of such cities as Rome, Florence, and Milan. The tour guide for this adventure is actor and filmmaker David Henrie, who is perhaps best known for his role on Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place.

As Henrie notes, “We wanted an experience for viewers, so we flipped the format on its head. We have someone who’s not an expert — which is me — inviting the audience to go on a journey. We go all over Italy, and we meet with locals, artists, experts, and I’m sitting down asking questions that maybe you at home would want to ask … I was blown away, hopefully, you’ll be blown away, too, because we had some beautiful experiences."

Henrie further points out that true beauty is timeless and teaches us today to appreciate the Master Artist Himself, God the Father. Whether it is the visual magnificence of a cathedral or the stirring sounds of an opera, beauty captivates us and prompts us to search for its source — namely, the Creator of All.

"David Henrie's passion for storytelling that honors the good, the true, and the beautiful aligns perfectly with EWTN's legacy of innovative Catholic media," said Peter Gagnon, President of EWTN Studios. "Through Seeking Beauty on EWTN+, we're not just entertaining, we're inspiring transformation, one breathtaking discovery at a time."

Long-time viewers of the global Catholic network may wonder about the “plus” in EWTN+. It is the network’s new streaming service, which is available, free of charge, on RokuTV. It has also recently launched on EWTN.com, AppleTV,  AmazonFireTV, and GoogleTV.

Unfortunately, modern culture often distorts the idea of beauty, reserving the label for Hollywood starlets and supermodels. As a result, it often becomes difficult to define true beauty in an age in which beauty is equated with Botox.

Spiritually Enriching

In Seeking Beauty, Henrie presents the spiritual dimension of beauty and shows viewers how it draws us closer to God. One could argue that there is no better place to do that than in sunny Italy. Of course, I’m biased — my paternal grandfather, a barber by trade, grew up in Italy before seeking his own grand adventure in the U.S. Therefore, since I was a child, I have been nourished by beautiful Italian food, music, and art. This, in turn, fed by hunger for the spiritual life. It is hard for me to separate Italian culture from the Divine, knowing that it was inspired by God the Father Himself.

I binge-watched the series, which can be tempting to do. But perhaps it is best viewed leisurely, allowing time for the message to seep in like a vintage wine at dinner. I am eager to watch the docuseries again — it is so rich in content that it is easy to miss something of significance.

Perhaps someday I will return to my ancestral homeland. Until that time, Seeking Beauty is a wonderful substitute.
