Anne DeSantis shares three ways to keep our relationship with our grown children centered on the faith we share with them.

Parenthood is a gift from God, and for Catholic mothers, it is a good idea to foster good and healthy relationships with our children from an early age. There are stages of motherhood beginning with the relationship between a mom and a pre-born child and through childhood and beyond. Here are tips to fostering great relationships centered on the faith we share with our children as they become adults.

Sharing faith

Our Catholic faith is something we share with our kids individually and as a family unit. Families go through stages of life just as individual people do. No matter what, when we share faith together through prayer, care, and growing together, good things happen along the way. This can continue through life, especially as teens grow into young adulthood. Prayer is a primary way to keep the connection to foster good relationships in the future.

Respecting their independence

As parents, we learn in our journey that independence comes gradually as our children grow, learn, and begin to make decisions on their own. When this is done as a step-by-step process, it fosters independence in a healthy and caring way. When we have done our best to teach our kids the importance of loving and living the faith, we will eventually have to trust them to make good decisions once they gradually grow into adulthood. Again, prayer is the best way to foster the love and respect which hopefully has been experienced in the process of growth.

Trusting God

Sometimes the most difficult thing to do as a parent is to trust the Lord in terms of the future when we have done all we can to be virtuous parents. The combination of prayer, right action, and trust is how this is done. It takes time to go through the process as kids develop into healthy adults, but so worth the time and effort of good parenting.

These points are meant to help to bring trust and guidance to parents whose children are growing into young adulthood. Continue to pray, hope and don’t worry, in the words of St. Padre Pio. Trust in the Lord and pray to foster good relationships with your kids as they develop into adults who love and serve God.
