Gate of Heaven: Reflections on Mary, the Mother of God
Edited by Matthew Becklo

Mother of God. Our Lady. The Blessed Virgin. Even as a lifelong Catholic, I often find that Mary remains an enigma to me. Sometimes she seems so humble, loving, and relatable and I feel comforted by her prayers and example. Other times I feel intimidated by her power and holiness and am uncertain how to approach her. Yet no matter what, there's a strong attraction to her, an ongoing desire to know her better and more deeply, and a firm belief that she will always lead me to her Son.
Gate of Heaven: Reflections on Mary, the Mother of God is a beautiful book for this purpose. A gorgeous book inside and out, Gate of Heaven is a collection of poetry, reflections, quotes, Scripture, prayers, and teachings from the Catechism — all about Our Lady.
Divided into sections on Mary's biblical roles as Daughter of Zion, Mother of Jesus, Mother of the Church, and Queen of Heaven, the book is a treasure full of insight and beauty. After the readings related to these roles, there is a section of Rosary meditations and Marian prayers, including several acts of consecration to Mother Mary. I have been slowly savoring this book this summer, taking it out on my porch for some quiet reading and reflection, learning more and drawing nearer to this Mother we have been given by God's love and grace.
The blue imitation leather cover and gold ribbon match the inside design theme of Guadalupe-like gold stars on a blue background. It is a lovely, lovely book and would make a great gift for any woman in your life — perhaps a convert to Catholicism, a mom of a new baby, or a kind grandmother in your parish.
