Enter to win a copy of The Lenten Cookbook, packed with European style recipes and information about fasting.

The Lenten Cookbook is actually two books in one. In it, you'll find 75 European style recipes by Swiss chef David Geisser, who had already begun working as a chef when he enlisted in the Pontifical Swiss Guard in 2013 and served the Pope until 2015. This is his third cookbook with Sophia Institute Press.

You'll also find nearly 50 pages of essays about fasting by noted Catholic theologian, author, and speaker Dr. Scott Hahn. These essays carry you through the history of the spiritual practice of fasting and how this ancient practice came to be an offering to the Lord. You'll learn what the early Church Fathers taught about fasting, and how the practice of fasting, including the observation of Ember Days, developed through the Middle Ages. Dr. Hahn also discusses reasons to fast, modern Church teaching on fasting and abstinence, and the specific rules Roman Catholics follow on days of fasting. The essays also cover the Lenten season, prayer while fasting, and times Catholics might choose to fast throughout the year. Sacred art is a beautiful accompaniment to the essay portion of The Lenten Cookbook.

Lenten Cookbook

With the spiritual and historical perspective about fasting fresh in our minds, it's time to approach the recipes—and plan the meals we'll serve our families on Ash Wednesday, the Fridays in Lent, and Good Friday. Here's my list of recipes from The Lenten Cookbook that I intend to include in our Lenten meal plans:

  • Mixed fruit salad
  • Homemade crunchy muesli
  • Sweet potato hash browns with fried egg
  • Eggs au gratin
  • Arugula lentil salad
  • Potato pancakes
  • Roasted vegetables with herb dip
  • Maluns
  • Italian-style flatbread
  • Flatbread

This cookbook also includes five ways to make the traditional Lenten baked good, hot cross buns. One of those calls for ingredients I can't easily get, but I'm planning to take the Hot Cross Bun Challenge and bake the other four varieties.

If you love cooking and are fascinated by Church history, The Lenten Cookbook is perfect for you!

On March 4, the first Friday in Lent, we'll be featuring a recipe from this cookbook for our Meatless Friday recipe. Plan to cook it along with us!
