Charlene Rack reviews a new children's book by Anthony DeStefano that offers multi-generational appeal.
Greenlee is Growing, a delightful children’s book by Anthony DeStefano, was written for his goddaughter, Greenlee.
By merging the seasons of the year with the “seasons” of life, DeStefano creates a beautiful story, in gently flowing rhyme, of growing up and growing old. As a graying “Mimi” myself, I found this to be a sweet, yet thought-provoking tale. Although I’m beyond 60, I’m still a caregiver for the elderly, so anything that encourages a better understanding in children of the history and the dignity of their aging family members makes me happy. This book has multi-generational appeal, with the potential to make a difference in family relationships.
I had the opportunity last week to read this book to one of my “sets” of grandchildren. All four of them gathered around me, climbing on top of me on the couch, while I read the book. They were very much taken in by the rich and lovely illustrations by Louise A. Ellis, asking questions like, “Who is that, and what are those, and why is the girl running?" There is much to stimulate the imagination and conversation of young children. I’m so happy to have this book added to my personal library. It’s one that will be read over and over, and over again!
Open your children’s eyes to the seasons of life for all of God’s children, while also instilling in them the beauty, wisdom, and gift of the elderly. We were all little children once, and we all grow older. Our kids will grow in wisdom when they can grasp that concept. This book will help!
