Jena Muhr discusses ten different ways to celebrate summer birthdays when you don’t have a backyard pool.

As a mom of four, I am getting better at planning and executing birthday parties. A caveat for me is that all of my kids, and my husband, are born in the summer months. This is (sarcastically) excellent planning on our part. We also do not have a pool at our house, nor do we live in a community with a pool. Having this many birthdays without a pool to rely on for an automatic party catalyst can be a bit of an obstacle.

Each of our kids is so different; they have different interests and different ideas for their birthday party each year. Here are ten party ideas that are either air-conditioned or summer heat-friendly that we have done in the past or attended in recent years.

Water Play

Have a slip ‘n slide or a water balloon fight for the most epic party ever. The kids can earn their cake by picking up all the balloon pieces after the fight. You will need way more water balloons than you think is possible.

Bowling

Last year, I was 9.5 months pregnant and we had pulled up two of our kiddos’ birthdays before the arrival of our youngest. My demands for party accommodations were high. I felt that the kids were lucky to have parties at all, considering the size of my ankles. I didn’t want to do any setup, I wanted it to be air-conditioned, and I wanted to be able to sit or stand at my instant request. And boy, did bowling deliver on all of these — plus, restrooms were close by and they serve food that you order at your leisure. Pro tip for younger or less competitive bowlers: Set up the lanes without names and let the kids take their own turns.

Turn a Birthday into a Mini-Vacation

Go away for the weekend with the family to celebrate. My kids love any hotel room and there is often a pool with the hotel. It doesn’t have to be fancy but it can be a great way to celebrate and a memory to share as a family.

Go to the Movies or Rent a Theater

I haven’t rented a theater personally, but my kids have attended a couple of birthday parties this way and they loved it!

Host a Fancy Tea Party (makeup and all!)

This is a great idea for a small group of girls. We did this for our daughter's 8th birthday and everyone loved it. Each girl got her own set of makeup and a mirror. Then we served tea and treats for all. For extra fun we dressed the boys in tuxedo shirts and they were the butlers.

Try Lazer Tag

Indoor and active for all of the busy kids who need something a bit more physical. Please note that all dads should stretch before joining in.

Pizza and Bonfire

If you have access to an outdoor projector screen, this would be great to add a movie to the party setup. S’mores can be added for extra fun.

Children’s Museum or Play Place

These were always a hit with my kids when they were little and can be very heat friendly. As my kids have gotten into the middle grades they’re greatly enjoying trampoline parks for birthday parties.

Donuts in the Park

Nothing says that birthday parties need to be in the afternoon or evening. Enjoy a party earlier in the day before it gets too hot. This is a great idea for drop-in birthdays to keep it extra low key, and everyone is happy with donuts and coffee on deck.

Water Jumper

For this one, you need a yard big enough to hold the jumper, but they are so much fun for the kids and can be a lot less stressful than having kiddos who may not be sure swimmers just yet. My kids have had a lot of fun at these types of parties, and the jumper never fails to impress. Don’t forget the ez-up for the parents watching the fun.

Remember, kids don’t need birthday parties each year. I am a big believer in having something to mark the day, but it does not need to be huge or over the top. Some birthdays are bigger than others and may warrant a bigger celebration. For big or small celebrations there are many, many options. Sometimes they just require a bit of different thinking and some out-of-the-box planning. At the end of the day, spending time with your kiddo is the best way to celebrate them.
