Marriage Enrichment Program Focuses on Married Saints

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, love is in the air. However, many of us who have been married several years may tend to put our marriages on the back burner while struggling to take care of our homes, jobs and families. It is not unusual to have a difficult time being a good wife to an independent husband while needy little ones take up most of our time and energy.

Would you like an easy way to rekindle those loving flames towards your husband from your earlier years? One that can be done on your own time, separate and together, that doesn’t require a huge commitment of time? One that is based on Catholic principles, Scripture and married saints? I would like to suggest such a program and encourage you to suggest to your husband to start it together on Valentine’s Day.

My son created a free, Catholic Marriage Enrichment Program called Emmaus 90 inspired by Exodus 90, which he did while a student at Notre Dame University. It is a Scripturally sound, spiritually based program that couples can do together or even with other couples. 

Emmaus 90 is a 90-day program for couples of all ages striving for holiness in their marriage based on the principle that we are called to continuously grow in loving God and our spouse more perfectly. Like the disciples on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35), you too can journey with Christ as He breaks open His Word and shares His life with us. This program applies Jesus’ words to our marriages in order to help us reflect His love.

A unique element of this program is access to free daily biographies, reflections, and thought-provoking questions on the lives of holy men and women, emailed right to your inbox.

Discipline and Habit Development

With your spouse, commit to specific ways you will live selflessly for 90 days. On the website are several ideas for growing your spiritual life, individually and together as a couple.

Accountability

The purpose of marriage is to get your spouse to heaven while building the kingdom of heaven together on earth. Become a steward of your spouse’s soul by holding each other accountable and learning to love God through and with one another.The website and emails suggest ways to set daily and weekly accountability goals to accomplish this.

Emmaus 90 started with a desire to provide a resource for couples who want to sanctify their marriage. This desire led to a fundamental question: what do married couples need right now? Inspired by his Catholic identity and led by the Holy Spirit, my son created Emmaus 90 based on a simple principle: married couples need role models, but not just any role models. We need to develop relationships with, and learn from, the people who were so devoted to the vocation of marriage that they became saints.

Many of the saints who are most well-known were celibate and had religious vocations, but there are actually more than 400 married saints. To quote Saint Teresa of Calcutta, we must all find our own Calcutta; for those of us called to the vocation of marriage, Calcutta primarily means loving our spouse as Christ loved the Church.
