For your listening pleasure: our Catholic Mom Community Advent Spotify playlist, plus a few new bonus tracks.

At this time of year, there's always a big controversy: is it too early to listen to Christmas music? For me, as a musician, it's a non-issue, because we've been rehearsing Christmas music since late October. So verses about stables and kings and gifts of gold and incense are already stuck in my head.

Regardless of how you stand on that topic, though, it's just about the right time to listen to Advent music.

Our contributing writer Jessica Ptomey has shared an Advent playlist, with 24 traditional songs.

New Music for Advent and Christmas 2021

Fans of instrumental music will enjoy this new release I've been listening to for a few weeks (even though it's not even Advent yet!): A Star in the East. It includes 15 tunes: some traditional and even ancient classics, and other original compositions by Ronn McFarlane and Carolyn Surrick. The combination of lute and viola da gamba makes for a peaceful sound that's lovely in the background as you go about your daily activities.

Also newly released is Sancta Nox: Christmas Matins from Bavaria. Get this one ready for your Christmas-Eve listening. Most of the 17 tracks are in Latin, except a multilingual version of "Silent Night" at the very end, and the Seminarians of St. Peter Wigratzbad are gifted singers. This a cappella album was recorded in the historic 12th-century St. Magnus Abbey of Bad Schussenried.
