Nikki Lamberg offers five guiding principles for serving God through your work, no matter what kind of work you do.

Working in the corporate world has often left me wondering where God fits in to all of this. If the rules are made by someone else, and the direction of my day is dictated by a calendar full of meetings, how can I be sure that I am still serving God’s purpose?

Although I am still working on this concept, I wanted to share a short list of guiding principles that help me to serve the way He wants me to serve.

Work with Integrity

Do what you say and say what you do. I’ll be the first to admit that in my leadership role, sometimes things fall through the cracks. But I will also be the first to admit when that happens, and I correct it. Keeping the integrity of the process, treating everyone equally, is just as important as getting the job itself done.

Be Respectful

This one doesn’t need much of an explanation as we all know what being respectful means. Be mindful and take care of everyone’s background and opinions. Give credit where credit is due, and don’t criticize someone for their wrongdoing. Using constructive criticism with a dose of confidence will go a long way.

Be Truthful

This one is easy. Tell the truth. Understanding that not all information can be shared right away for the betterment of the company, if you have a history of being honest with your team, they will trust you through the uncertain times.

Give Encouragement

This one we don’t do nearly enough. It is not enough to assume someone knows you appreciate them or are doing a good job. Praise is just as important as constructive criticism in helping an employee know their worth. When employees feel valued, they will give you their all.

Lead as You Want to Be Led

Treat others the way you want to be treated. Help others when they need help. If you’re a leader, get in to the work with them so they know you understand their workflow when make decisions.

We could truly apply God’s golden rules of “love one another as I have loved you” and “treating your neighbor as yourself” and incorporating this short list of servitude to every area of life. Honor generates honor. Loyalty generates loyalty. Participate and lead the way you want to be treated and led. Follow these guiding principles, and you will surely be loving, serving, and honoring the Lord.
