Caroline Godin considers the parallels between a mother’s connection to her child and our connection to Mary in the Rosary.

Maternal Love

Nothing on earth can compare to a mother’s love. The bond begins immediately from conception. Even when mother and child (of any age) are at odds, there’s a deep connection that makes the unrest more difficult than that of being at odds with any other family member.

A mother wants what’s best for her child: to protect her child. A mother seeks to guide her child to a better life than her own.

As children, we sought our mothers’ approval. When faced with big moments, we often run to our mothers. Those who lose a mother often feel a bigger hole in their hearts than losing a father.

[Please understand, these are general and common conceptions. There are always exceptions.]

Ultimately, maternal love is a powerful force.

Loving our Children

As mothers watching our children grow, our hearts ache to see the world in which they’re growing. We want to pull them into our laps and shelter them from the messiness of life. For my six-foot-tall son, it’s a little awkward.

What I don’t want to do is keep them from their mission in life. God has a plan for them, and He’s considered all the world’s mess. I can’t shelter them. There are experiences they must have and lessons they must learn. But boy, is it hard watching it unfold.

While they discover and learn and experience, I bear wrongs patiently, teaching them firmly but with love, and leading by example.

And I pray. I pray so much. I spend my days in prayer for them. This is the most I can offer my oldest two, since they don’t need me for much else now. My little, I can still cuddle.

Mary, our Queen

In ancient times, the queen was not the wife of the king; the mother of the king was. Just so, Mary, as the Mother of Jesus, is our Queen. He gave her to us to be our Mother. The most humble and faithful servant became our Mother. How beautiful is that?

When a family is broken, they can run to Mary. When a mother is hurting and has no support, she can run to Mary. When a child loses a mother, or the other way around, they can run to Mary.

Jesus gave us a precious gift, His Mother, so that we will always have that maternal love. She prays for us like only a mother can. She listens to our joys and our woes. She wants what’s best for us. Knowing what’s truly best for us, she points us to her Son, Jesus.

Calling on our Mother

Praying the Rosary is like having a beautiful and comforting talk with the most loving mother. It’s all we need when times are hard or stress is heavy. Especially for those without a mother or whose mothers are unable to help them due to distance (physical, mental, or emotional) or illness, the Rosary connects us to Jesus’s Mother. She is waiting to comfort us, pray for us, and hold us in her loving arms.
