Today's Gospel: Luke 8:19-21 "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it." Imagine the crowd pressing in to listen to the man called Jesus they’ve heard so much about. I would think they would have been confused when they heard His answer to the messenger that His mother and brothers want to see Him. Doesn’t He want to talk to His mom? But then can you imagine the excitement of the Apostles when they heard him say those same words? Here is the Son of the Living God calling His followers His “brothers”! Are you excited to hear these words from Jesus? I know I am! Are you a little daunted? Be honest. I know I feel that way. It isn’t enough that we hear the word of God. No, we can’t stop there. We must act on it. We must love our enemies. We must pray for those who hate us. We must forgive 70 times 7 times. Jesus wants us to overcome our selfish natures. He wants us to get out of our boats and walk on the water to meet Him. We need to remember, though, that Jesus does not leave us to do this alone. He’s not a brother who only sends cards on our birthday and Christmas. Jesus is our loving brother and merciful Savior who sends us His Spirit to give us the courage and strength to hear and act.

Ponder:

Do I truly hear the word of God and let those words inspire me to act?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, help me to have ears to hear Your word and give me the courage to be Your feet and hands to those around me.
