Reflection by Leona Peszka Today's Gospel: Luke 24:46-53 - The Ascension of Our Lord Luke’s gospel for today recounts the Ascension of our Lord into heaven. In the past, I was always somewhat puzzled by the reaction of the disciples in this scripture. I have lost a best friend and several family members and am far too familiar with the agonizing grief that accompanies such a loss. And, yet, the disciples "return to Jerusalem with great joy", fully aware that they will not see their friend again on earth. What makes the disciples sing with praise at the Ascension? Faith, pure and simple. The Apostles had lived, loved and served with our Lord. They watched Him die a horrific death, be buried and then rise from the dead, as He said He would. And they had witnessed the resurrected Christ. After their painful period of mourning, they came to understand that through the Paschal Mystery He would never really leave them. He would always live in His Word and in His Sacraments and in the souls of those who believe. They knew that He had prepared them with the truth and would fortify them with the Holy Spirit. Their faith in Jesus’ promise of salvation and everlasting life is why the disciples would continually praise the name of God, even if they could no longer see Him. We, too, have been given the gift of faith; the ability to believe without seeing and the capacity to recognize that Jesus lives in all those who love and accept Him. We, too, have the Word and sacraments to strengthen and foster this faith. And we can rejoice in knowing that our loved ones are one with the communion of saints and share in the eternal life promised by our Lord God, Jesus Christ. Let us forever praise His Name.

Ponder:

How do we thank God for keeping His promise to remain with us until the end of time?

Pray:

Lord, please help us to always recognize You in Your Word, in the sacraments and in every act of kindness.
