Today's Gospel: Luke 17:20-25 What exactly is the kingdom of God? I always think I know, but when I start to think more about it, it’s like a memory that I know I have, but cannot recall exactly. Does it need to be so mysterious? Jesus shared a lot about the kingdom of God while He travelled through Israel. It is always compared to something -- a man sowing a mustard seed, a merchant searching for a precious pearl, a woman taking yeast and leavening it to make bread, a man who finds a hidden treasure. In recent years, one thing that has stood out to me in the majority of these kingdom parables is that they are about some type of action. Sure, we can reflect on the seed, the pearl, the yeast, the treasure, but on their own, they have little meaning. So what is the kingdom, then? Jesus says, "The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed", and one of the things I’m called to reflect on is that He gives us the answer at the end of the sentence: "For, in fact, the kingdom of God is among you." If it is in my midst, then I am a part of the revealing of the kingdom. What I do can reveal the kingdom? And am I the man sowing the seed? The woman using yeast to leaven the bread? The merchant searching for that one fine pearl? The actions that we do are directly involved in whether or not the kingdom is made manifest in us.

Ponder:

As we go through today, can we be aware of how our actions are growing the kingdom of God, of how we are a seed of that kingdom?

Pray:

Jesus, we ask that You would help us to grow Your kingdom through us, with us, and in us for Your Father’s glory.
