Reflection by Father Edward Looney Today's Gospel: Luke 1:26-38 The Angel Gabriel’s words to Mary are powerful: “Nothing will be impossible for God.” And everything preceding those words testifies to that. A woman conversing with an angel. A virgin being told that she will give birth without having relations with a man. A woman advanced in years being pregnant with a child after decades of barrenness. As Christmas draws nearer, we know that even a virgin-birth is possible. And as we read the gospels in their entirety, we see that nothing is impossible for God, because the blind see, the deaf hear, and the lame walk. Often in our lives we might doubt and question where God is or whether He will ever show up. In those moments we must not give up but persevere believing in a God who loves us. When we become distraught that a child of ours has left the Church or doesn’t practice the faith, we hold on to our belief that God is working in their life, and one day will realize their need for God. Their conversion is not impossible, because all things are possible for God. Or the discouragement that comes when we fall to sin--our ability to overcome it is not impossible, because for God, all things are possible. If our forthcoming celebration of Christmas tells us anything, it is this, that the impossible can happen. God invisible becomes visible, incarnate in Jesus Christ. The impossible begins to happen when we keep our faith and hold fast to the angel’s words, “Nothing will be impossible for God.” When things become difficult in life, repeat those words, don’t forget them, and keep believing.

Ponder:

What doubts do I hold on to, believing that even God cannot do anything?

Pray:

Lord, give me a faith like the Blessed Virgin, believing that all things are possible for You.
