Today's Gospel: Mark 6:7-13 - Memorial of Saint Paul Miki and Companions This reading finds Christ sending His disciples out into the world to share about the Kingdom. Before they leave, Jesus gives His devoted followers some very specific instructions. They were not to take anything extra with them. Not even a spare tunic. They were to stay with whoever was hospitable enough to host them. But if people were not receptive to their message, then they were to leave, shaking the dust from under their feet. To me, all these instructions point to one thing: that above all else, they were to trust. Trust in people’s kindness. Trust that the right words would come to them. Trust that they were ready even though they probably felt wholly unprepared. Trust that every need would be met. And this occurred before Christ’s death and Resurrection. Meaning before the disciples received the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Even though these men had not yet received divine blessings to help with their mission, they knew Jesus. But despite witnessing His miracles, and hearing His teachings firsthand, they still felt unprepared. This is a good reminder to me that I don’t have to have all the answers or the perfect words to share about Christ’s kingdom. As confirmed Catholics, we do have the Holy Spirit’s help when we share and show our beliefs. As is promised to us in Luke 12:12, the Holy Spirit will teach you in the moment what you should say. Everything we need to share our faith will be provided. All we need to do is trust.

Ponder:

How does your life reflect your trust in Christ?

Pray:

Dear God, please help me to trust completely in You. Please help me to recognize the moments when I can share my faith with others; fill me with the knowledge and understanding necessary to share Your kingdom with others. Amen.
