Today's Gospel: Luke 1:26-38 - Annunciation of the Lord Mary was greatly troubled at the angel's greeting. This is even before the angel revealed why he was sent to her. The angel called her "favored" and said that the Lord was with her. Finding favor with God is a good thing -- a very good thing -- but it's not going to come easily or without cost. When the angel told Mary that she would bear a son, she must have realized what it would cost her in terms of her reputation in the community, and possibly her relationship with Joseph. But I don't think that's what "greatly troubled" her. She was reassured when she learned the news about Elizabeth, and when the angel declared that "nothing will be impossible for God." Nothing will be impossible. When we live according to God's plan and purpose, this is exactly the truth in which we trust. Elizabeth knew God had given her a great gift; Mary was told she had found God's favor. Both of them conceived their sons under impossible circumstances. Yet Elizabeth rejoiced, knowing her pregnancy was a miracle. And Mary trusted: "Let it be done to me according to your word."

Ponder:

Do I have the kind of trust in God that Mary had -- the kind of trust that leads to a freely given "yes" to God's call?

Pray:

Lord, as I ponder Mary's example of trust, lead me to live in a way that finds favor with You, and to respond to Your call without worrying about the cost.
