Today's Gospel: John 6:22-29

A friend of mine recently gave me a simple but foolproof recipe for homemade bread, and every time I've made it, the boule comes out soft and warm on the inside and delightfully crispy on the outside. It amazes me that something so delicious and comforting can come of simply some flour, yeast, water, and heat. There's more to this bread than just the ingredients; it complements the rest of the meal and adds a warmth to our dinner conversations.

In a similar way, there is more to the miracle of feeding the thousands than simply the unexplainable distribution of the loaves. Our Lord was demonstrating how the nourishment of our souls can multiply and affect the hearts of countless others around us; the sustenance that comes from the Bread of Life is that powerful.

Unfortunately the crowds, in their pursuit of more miracles and awe, missed the deeper understanding of what Our Lord was demonstrating. He explains that He is the Bread of Life, which sustains us for far longer than any combination of yeast, flour and water ever could. It all leads up to what He eventually explains later in this same chapter about the well-known teaching of eating His flesh, a teaching that confounded many and will ever remain a tenet of our faith.
Unfortunately we too can get wrapped up in the sensational effects of the supernatural as opposed to understanding the deeper work that takes place interiorly. We look for a sign, and we seek to satiate our physical senses, all the while He is constantly working and feeding our souls with His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity at every sacrifice of the Mass. Even my most perfect boule will never taste as sweet as the life He gives! Let us rejoice!

Ponder:

In our prayer and devotions, are we looking too hard for something that satisfies our senses, or do we rest in His life-giving nourishment?

Pray:

Dear Lord, help us in our limited capacity to understand the precious gift You have given us in the Eucharist.
