Today's Gospel: Luke 11:29-32

It’s easy to despair when we listen to the news: common themes such as poverty, injustice, natural disasters, and political corruption fuel our anger and eat away at our hope. Where is God in all of these calamities? the world asks. How can we as Catholics convey hope in a world that only sees disaster?

When it feels as though the world is falling apart, it’s easy to long for a message from Heaven, a miraculous and undeniable sign that proves to the masses that God is indeed on His throne and in control. In today’s Gospel, Jesus rebukes His followers for demanding just that, and it’s ironic to us that His followers do not recognize the Messiah, in all His divinity, preaching right in front of them.

Jesus may not be walking the earth in 2021, but signs of His sovereignty are all around us. Prayers are still being answered, and miracles are still happening. And - perhaps less jaw-dropping than an unexplainable phenomenon - hearts are still turning back to God. Let us stop searching for the sensational and notice the small but powerful evidence of God in our individual lives. Because One greater than any politician, any social cause, any economic trend, or any institutional system is here. And He's been here all along! Let's take notice and appreciate how God is moving in this very day and age.

Ponder:

How do you see God working in your individual life despite all the bad news all around us?

Pray:

Lord, You are omnipotent and sovereign. Help me to see Your marvelous works around me, even while I am occupied in the mundane and routine tasks of the day.
