Today's Gospel: Matthew 17:14-20

Imagine what the disciples must have felt like after Jesus performs a miracle and drives out a demon in today’s Gospel.

A man has brought his son to the Lord, in hopes of his being healed. He’d already been to see the disciples, but their attempts had failed. Jesus is able to cure the boy, and afterward the disciples are, of course, curious as to why they couldn’t do the same.

Jesus answers them, “Because of your little faith.”

Ouch.

Here in the twenty-first century, this line stings, because I know there are plenty of times when the same could be said of me. How often do I fail to walk the walk, as it were? I profess myself to be a Christian, but how constant, how steadfast is my faith? There are times I doubt. There are times I fall. We all do.

Jesus isn’t finished yet, though. He continues, “Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

If the first line felt all too real, the last one is difficult to fathom. Nothing will be impossible? Like, really, nothing?

Too often I find myself disappointed because I can’t do it all on my own, and simultaneously hesitant to believe in the power of Jesus. I’ve got it all backwards, and that’s what Jesus is trying to correct in this reading.

Without Him, we’re going to struggle. With Him, the victory is already won.

Ponder:

In what area of your life do you doubt the power of Jesus? What’s holding you back?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, I believe in Your power and the power of Your Name. Lord, help my unbelief! Amen.
