Reflection by Melanie Rigney
Today's Gospel: Luke 7:18B-23
Everyone thought the messiah would be a great liberator, maybe an awesome warrior or a king. Despite the prophecies, it was hard to see how this young man could be the one they’d been waiting for. But He was, and when He gave that news to John the Baptist’s messengers, John believed.
Jesus continues to confound us today. We believe in Him, of course, but too often, we fail to see Him in the miracles right before our eyes: in not only physical cures, but also in conversions of souls, the driving out of inner demons, and the bringing of clarity to our earthly confusion. Or we feel frustrated and disappointed and question His love when He doesn’t provide the miracles we want, like restored health for ourselves or our loved ones, or financial success.
In a few days, we’re going to celebrate Jesus’s coming into the world as a helpless infant. Since we accept that, may we also receive the grace to accept Him in all the forms in which He is present today. May we believe.
Ponder:
Where is Jesus stretching your expectations of Him?
Pray:
Jesus, may I serve You fully and without question today.
