Today's Gospel: Matthew 7:21, 24-2

I don’t know about you, but I am a very visual learner. Try to explain something to me over the phone, or even in person with wild hand gestures, and I’m lost. But open a notebook and draw it for me or show me a picture online and I’m in!

That’s why I love the descriptive metaphors Jesus uses in today’s Gospel. Just reading it creates vivid images in my mind. “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.” I can imagine that solid structure, a sturdy fortress that will not waver. “And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand.” That poor house just sinks right in and collapses.

Now if we imagine our souls as that house, all becomes clear. What kind of foundation am I built upon? I remember a homilist saying once that we feed our bodies at least three times a day but many of us only feed our souls once a week. Our souls are starving for Jesus!

So how do we awaken that longing within us? How do we begin to build that sturdy foundation? I have begun to take baby steps. Each morning after I prepare for work, I sit in my recliner, look out our large picture window and enjoy a few minutes of silence with my Lord. It’s amazing how just a few minutes helps me to be more at peace and more focused on bringing Jesus to others that day.

So as we begin our Advent journey this week, let us take one baby step toward the Baby Jesus.

Ponder:

What small step can you take today toward building your house on the Rock?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, as we prepare for Your coming as a newborn baby, help us to realize that You are the only Rock our lives should be built on. Jesus, I trust in You!
