Today's Gospel: Luke 1:57-66

If God suddenly made us mute for nine months, it would make doing our work, communicating with family and friends, and praying very difficult. Imagine the annoyance of this, week after week, if we weren’t used to it.

When God made it possible again to speak, would a blessing be the first thing out of our mouths? I’m guessing a complaint might be more likely!

Zechariah’s example reminds us to bless God always, even during seasons that try our endurance. I like to imagine that Zechariah used that time, during which he served as priest in the temple, to get closer to God. Perhaps during those months in the Holy of Holies, when it was hard for Zechariah to communicate with anyone else, God made Himself known in an intimate way that he had not experienced before. Perhaps this helped prepare him for the unforeseen mission of raising John the Baptist, the one who would prepare the way for Jesus Christ, savior of the world.

During times of unexpected upheaval, confusion, or desolation, Jesus invites us to walk extra close to Him, helping Him carry His cross. If we do so willingly, looking for the power of the Cross amidst the pain, we, too, can come out of it blessing God’s goodness and mercy. We can come out of it prepared for the future blessings God has in store for us.

Ponder:

Can I recognize the blessings that came out of a difficult time?

Pray:

Lord, help me to think of You instead of myself when times are hard, looking for the gift of grace I know You are offering.
