Today's Gospel: Matthew 9:27-31

Matthew paints a vivid picture of two blind men stumbling after Jesus, crying loudly for mercy. Notice that they do not ask to be cured. Jesus ignores them. Still, they persist and follow him into a house. He rewards their faith and their eyes were opened.

I study this passage and think of my own spiritual blindness. C.S. Lewis writes about this affliction in The Screwtape Letters. Screwtape is a senior devil advising a junior devil on how to corrupt the human soul. Keep that soul blind to facts about himself “which are perfectly clear to anyone who has ever lived in the same house with him or worked in the same office.”

Now that is a zinger. Ready for some self-disclosure? For a long time a mean voice buzzed in my head, judging people. I was not aware of the voice until about a year ago. So, it only took me several decades to figure that out. Mr. Screwtape would be pleased with this accomplishment.

I have brought this weakness to confession and have definitely found healing. Just like the two blind men, we must be persistent in prayer. Jesus will always stop and listen.

Ponder:

Can you place yourself in this scriptural reading? Can you see your own spiritual blindness and bring that to confession?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, grant clear vision that I might see myself as You see me. Take away my spiritual blindness that I may grow in holiness.
