Today's Gospel: Luke 10:21-24

On the day my daughter was born, a snowstorm hit Cape Cod. I informed my husband that I was in labor. At first, he was in denial, saying, “You can’t be in labor, it’s snowing.” You can guess who won that discussion. Several hours later, our child was born.

When I first gazed into her eyes, she seemed to have a quizzical look. All the world was a wondrous landscape of blurry faces and bright lights.

I think of that moment when I read today’s Gospel. Jesus rejoices in the Holy Spirit and thanks His Father.

At that very moment he rejoiced [in] the holy Spirit and said,

“I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.”

Newborns slip out of darkness into a dazzling world. Miracles abound in every mother’s smile or sweet lullaby. My mother-in-law wrote me a wise note upon the arrival of her grandchild, counseling me that my life would never be the same again.

How true that was. I had to learn to change diapers, to be patient and respond to the cry of a baby at midnight. I nursed my little one at dawn to the sound of a robin chirping. I learned to put the needs of an infant before my wants. Oh, how I wanted to take a hot shower right now. That shower and those hot scrambled eggs had to wait. First things first. A child led me to the meaning of self-sacrificing love.

Ponder:

Am I grateful for the challenges of family life, accepting with joy every sacrifice I must make to love my children and husband?

Pray:

Dear Lord, I thank You from the bottom of my heart for giving me the chance to be a wife and mother. Let me always hug my family in times of joy and sadness.
