Today's Gospel: John 1:35-42
Our life can change in a moment. While we are going about our business, we overhear a comment by another person or receive an invitation from a friend. What they say or recommend intrigues us and we find ourselves watching a movie, trying a restaurant, or following someone new on social media. Our friends can motivate us to move in a different direction.
As mothers of teens and young adults, we often worry about this same effect of peer pressure on our children. We know that the people they surround themselves with creates a powerful influence on their self-confidence, choices, and actions. We pray they not only make friends who encourage them in positive ways, but also that our children have developed their own strength of character to be a good influence on others.
Today’s Gospel reminds us that Jesus used others to call His disciples to Him. Peter’s brother, Andrew, discovered Jesus through John the Baptist and then approaches Jesus, who invites him and another to "Come, and you will see". Filled with excitement, Andrew spreads the word to his brother and brings him to Jesus. In turn, these early disciples continue to invite others and later are commissioned by Jesus to go out into the world and spread the Good News. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, they succeed in this mission.
Like the disciples, we are also on a mission through the Holy Spirit to go out in the world and bring the Good News of Jesus, through our behavior and words. Be purposeful in your testimony and witness as you interact both in person or online with others.
Ponder:
Are you listening for Jesus? Who does he use to call you today closer to Him?
Pray:
Lord, when I seek you, let me find you in others. Call me, I am here ready to do your will.
