Today's Gospel: Matthew 10:24-33 - Memorial of St. Benedict

“There’s always someone watching,” I recently told my son after Tae Kwon Do practice. We were discussing which was more important, trying your best and failing, or cheating and continuing the exercise under false pretenses. Earlier that evening, he had tried to cheat his way through a jumping contest. However, he was so concerned about getting into the winning group he didn’t realize the whole room saw him duck under the rope instead of jumping over it.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus reveals to His apostles just how intimately God knows each of us: “Even all the hairs on your head are counted." As the crown of all creation, Jesus affirms that humans are more precious to God than everything else He created: “You are worth more than many sparrows."

Along with the cliché phrase at the start, another comes to mind: “With great power comes great responsibility.” As the crowning glory of creation, Jesus also impresses upon us the need to acknowledge Him, to affirm who He is as the Son of God. God, our loving creator, has gifted us with a gift beyond all price – free will. With that free will, we are able to choose to love Him or not.

Every moment of every day is an opportunity to choose Jesus, to acknowledge His presence in our lives. We can give each day our all, we can strive to do our best regardless of whether we are in company or alone. Or, we can take short-cuts, side steps, or skip over the things we don’t want to do but know we ought to.

God knows us. He loves us unconditionally. He is always with us, patiently waiting for us to acknowledge His presence in our present moment.

Every moment of every day is an opportunity to choose Jesus, to acknowledge His presence in our lives. #dailygospel

Ponder:

Think back over yesterday, where are some moments you missed God's presence and how can you better find Him in today's?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, thank you for your constant presence in my life. Please open my eyes to better acknowledge You in each moment of my day.
