Today's Gospel: Matthew 12:1-8

To me this Gospel is a bit hard to understand, but if you read further on in the last part of this passage, Jesus talks about doing good deeds on Sabbath (this part is verses 9-12). So, Jesus is human. He needs to eat, so he grabs some corn - no harm, right? Well, those Pharisees always object to things! As we see further in the passage - Jesus is saying it is ok to do this (eat the corn) and to do "good deeds" on the Lord's day.

As Christians, are we really observing the Lord's day as we should? This passage is something we should look at. Are we just going to Mass like a drone and then going home and watching TV the rest of the day? Why not do a good deed?
Now a good deed on the Sabbath should not be physical labor (that is unnecessary work) - however, a good deed could be giving alms to the poor! A good deed could be taking a friend out to eat (and perhaps you know this friend needed cheering up). So, take time to give a friend a meal and visit with her - this is a good deed. I am sure you can think of other good deeds to do on the Sabbath.

Ponder:

What good deed will you do this Sabbath to remind yourself of Jesus' humanity?

Pray:

Today is also the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Blessed Virgin of the Scapular of Mount Carmel, help us get to heaven and remind us of Jesus' humanity. Amen.
