Today's Gospel: Matthew 10:1-7

The largest Christian denomination, by most accounts, is that of former Catholics, especially those who classify as recovering or fallen away.

It’s not so surprising, really. Being Catholic — being Christian — isn’t an easy proposition. It requires effort and there’s an authority demanding more than you often want to give.

In today’s Gospel, we read the list of the Big Twelve, the first apostles. They’re made up of mostly uneducated nobodies from Podunkville in Nowheresville. And yet, today, we revere them as among our greatest examples for evangelization.

Notice, too, that Jesus sent them to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

If Jesus showed up today and looked at you and me, I suspect He would send us out, not to the wide world, but to those family members, friends, and associates who used to be Catholics. Maybe He would roll his eyes at the modern notion of evangelization, which requires books and pamphlets, and point instead to the everyday witness that converts so many.

He would definitely, though, stand beside you and encourage you.

In fact, he already does.

If Jesus showed up today and looked at you and me, I suspect He would send us out, not to the wide world, but to those family members, friends, and associates who used to be Catholics. #dailygospel

Ponder:

What can you do to proclaim the Kingdom of heaven? Find one small thing today and do it.

Pray:

Jesus, You sent Your apostles, and You send me. Thank You for guiding me in proclaiming Your kingdom.
