Today's Gospel: Luke 16:1-8
Pause a moment and think of the last time you royally screwed something up.
Hard not to grimace, isn’t it? And maybe to crawl under the table in a fetal position?
The steward in today’s Gospel was guilty. He didn’t do his job well (or maybe at all). He was not just warned, but pre-fired.
His crime was dishonesty, something that you don’t really want in the guy who’s in charge of all your worldly goods.
But you don’t find him curled up or feeling sorry for himself. In fact, he’s not even pausing to reflect. This steward was a man of action.
He immediately went out and started to salvage things. It wasn’t 100%, but it was something.
You might say he had a conversion of heart. You might say that conversion woke him up. You might also say that he saved himself.
But you would be wrong. He didn’t save himself. He took action, yes. But the saving came from his master, who commended him and, we presume, kept him on board.
There’s something to be said for the model of the dishonest steward. We all have our moments of failings, but those don’t have to define us. We can lean into God’s mercy and trust Him to carry us, even as we choose to move forward in a new direction.
Ponder:
When’s the last time you went to confession? Today, set a time to go.
Pray:
Lord, You show so much mercy to me. Thank You for the abundance of Your love for me.
