Today's Gospel: Matthew 8:5-17
"As you have believed, let it be done for you." Oh, what a challenge to weak faith that is. The centurion didn't ask Jesus to step into his house, to touch the sick man, or even to let the man touch the hem of His garment. The centurion's faith didn't require the physical means Jesus chose for so many other miracles - he believed that if the Lord willed to heal, that healing would occur, no matter what, when, where, or how.
When I beg and plead with the Lord for some miracle, how often am I merely worrying at him rather than trusting him? I tell the Lord my plans, my solutions; I explain to Him exactly what He needs to do to fix the situation. Deep down, I'm trying to control my Savior, because my faith is week. If I truly believed, I could say with the centurion, "Only say the word", and then step back and let Him work.
The centurion is a compelling model for us in the modern world, so far removed from the direct ministry of Jesus. We, like him, have to believe that the Lord will work wonders even when we don't feel his presence in the sickroom.
Ponder:
What's the biggest thing in my life right now that I want the Lord to heal? Can I surrender it completely to Him?
Pray:
Divine Physician, only say the word and [insert your intention here] will be healed.
