Today's Gospel: Luke 21:1-4
"Her whole livelihood" - this phrase hearkens back to that first and greatest commandment, to love the Lord our God with our whole heart, soul, and mind. God commands totality of gift. Why does He want everything? Can't we keep something back for ourselves - just one little bad habit that isn't hurting anyone else? Just one nasty thought as long as we don't express it? No, it's everything or nothing with God.
But when we dive deeper into this totality of gift, we realize that by giving God everything we have and are, we receive something far greater in return: Him. We give ourselves away to be immolated in the fire of His divine love, and in turn, we become living images of God Himself. The more we empty ourselves, the more He fills us.
There's no room in God for "I love you, but..." He doesn't place any restrictions on His love for us, so why do we hold back our love for Him?
Ponder:
What is one area of my life in which I'm clinging to a sin rather than giving that part of me to God? Maybe it's desire for control, anger, fear, sadness, or lack of charity - whatever it is, bring it into the light.
Pray:
Jesus, help me to give myself to You with a profound totality of gift so I can make space in my life to receive Your infinite love.
