Today's Gospel: Luke 11:14-23

The crowds were amazed, but what kind of amazement was it? Not the awe that should be experienced when we know we have witnessed something supernatural, something of the power of Heaven. How do we know? Because immediately, some of them assert that His power comes from hell; others ask Him for a sign.

Interestingly, Saint Luke places this immediately after Jesus has taught them the Lord’s Prayer, and described the goodness of the Father to His children. Now we see how these lessons are ignored. Instead of asking and receiving the Spirit from Heaven (Lk 11:13), they seek a “sign from heaven”. Instead of asking God to deliver them from testing (11:4), they put Jesus to the test. Instead of asking forgiveness (11:4), they accuse Jesus of colluding with the devil. Instead of acknowledging that Jesus manifests the power of God’s kingdom (11:2), they accuse Him of working for Satan’s rule.

Jesus replies with a brief parable about the strong man guarding his possessions, feeling secure. This can represent the devil, the “Prince of this World,” who has enslaved man to sin and moved through history since Eden. He is a tyrannical ruler who exerts power and must protect his “possessions.” But a stronger one comes and overtakes him – Jesus comes to make war on Satan, take away the armor on which he relies, and establish God’s Kingdom on earth.

In this battle, there is no neutral territory. Satan hides behind the armor of questions and rationalizations and fears. We are challenged to choose a side! Jesus is the “Great Gatherer,” longing to draw all to himself; we are either with Jesus or against him! We either gather with him or we are guilty of scattering.

Ponder:

What are the subtle ways I question God's power in my life, or in the lives of others?

Pray:

Lord, keep me open to genuine awe so that I allow myself to be surprised by grace, humbled by Your quiet Presence, and grateful for all You pour into my life.
