Today's Gospel: Fifth Sunday of Lent - John 12:20-33

Jesus’ message can be challenging, forcing us to think deeply about the direction of our lives. Yet ultimately it is also a message of profound and beautiful hope.

In this well-known passage, Christ is calling on us to die to ourselves, so that we can live for Him. Our ability to bear fruit—to be of help to the Kingdom—depends on our denying ourselves, picking up our various crosses, and following Jesus. If we are enamored of the world and its delights, but are in denial of our responsibility to Christ and His word, we will flounder.

In sharp contrast, if we are dedicated to Christ in this life, with all the hardships that will bring, we can rejoice in the eternal life God has prepared for us. We must serve Jesus by serving our neighbor, with the many sacrifices that discipleship entails.

While some might view this passage as discouraging, it actually represents a pathway to hope and lasting joy. As Jesus states, “The Father will honor whoever serves me.” In serving Christ, we fulfill our purpose on this earth: to know God, to love Him, and to serve Him. As a result, the promise of heaven is within our reach.

But heaven was bought at a steep price—Jesus had to suffer and die in order for the gates of paradise to be open for us. Jesus knows His mission and He accepts it lovingly. As He says, "it was for this purpose that I came to this hour.”

We can draw strength from Jesus’ words. In our darkest hours, we can have the courage to go on, resting comfortably in His abiding love. Our path may be rocky at times, but it leads to a wonderful destination—our heavenly home. And in that we rejoice.

Ponder:

In what ways do you need to die to yourself in order to live fully for Christ?

Pray:

Lord, it can be difficult to die to self in order to live for You. Please give me the grace to endure hardships for Your Kingdom.
