Today's Gospel: Luke 5:27-32

The Lord’s call can be daunting and somewhat mystifying. After all, it requires a total commitment of mind, body, and spirit. There is no halfway when following Jesus. You are either going to surrender to God’s good plan or you will wander in the wilderness.

Perhaps, like Levi, you have left everything behind to follow Jesus. It might have meant pursuing your vocation as a wife and mother, as a member of a religious order, or as a single person devoting your work to God. Or maybe you’re just beginning to wonder whether you can really leave behind your personal attachments and goals and follow the path Christ has prepared for you.

I can attest to the fact that one can discover great peace, serenity, freedom, and joy in following the Lord. It’s true that crosses remain, but the crosses are bearable, because Christ is sharing the burden.

For me, following Jesus meant leaving a career and home behind and venturing out into the vineyard as a pro-life advocate. Placing myself at the service of the Lord and being His hands and His feet have been incredibly rewarding.

Your call may not be as dramatic, but it can mean overcoming your doubts, fears, and insecurities and trusting in the good God to see you through.

And how comforting it is to know that Jesus is eager to be with us, even in our brokenness. He understands the sickness caused by sin and knows that none of us is immune. And yet, even as we are sinners, He loves us without reserve.

This day, consider offering a word of thanks to Jesus for loving you, even when you fall short of the mark of righteousness. His love is a tremendous gift, and should never be taken for granted.

Ponder:

Where do you think Christ is calling you to serve at this stage of your life?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, thank You for loving me in the midst of my brokenness. Please lead me on the path that will serve You best.
