Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: John 17:20-26

These past 12+ months have offered us a new perspective on what it means to be united. In a time that has found many of us in highly isolated situations, we have also discovered how closely we are able to tie ourselves to our communities. Whether it has been through social media, Zoom, becoming more active in social or political movements, or other means of connection, this past year has brought the world into a new place of togetherness.

Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, “That they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you.” I have found something of this level of intimacy through the Act of Spiritual Communion. As the seasons have fluctuated, there have been extended periods where we have been unable to physically attend Mass. But Jesus hasn’t stopped reaching out to us, even if it had to be through a screen.

The words of the Act of Spiritual Communion are so powerful. They are, in effect, a means of bringing Jesus’ prayer into a new and meaningful existence in the here and now.

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if you were already there, and I unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.

This prayer by St. Alphonsus Liguori has been said for generations, but it has become a lifeline for so many of us today. It continues to carry the Church through our difficult time. Even when we are able to return to Mass, it is one that we can continue to pray, and will continue to unite us ever more closely with our Savior.

Ponder:

How has the Act of Spiritual Communion affected your relationship with Jesus?

Pray:

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if you were already there, and I unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.
