Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Luke 17:26-37

They were eating, drinking, and marrying until the flood came and destroyed them all. Those were the people in Noah’s time; so too were those living in the time of Lot, known for their wickedness.

We don’t know when Jesus will return and establish His kingdom. Nor do we know the end of each of our days. “Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it.”

But do we live watchfully, as though the days are numbered? Or are we like those described in the first reading who are “distracted by what they see, because the things seen are fair.”

Do we keep everything in the perspective of the brevity of life? It completely changes the focus, doesn’t it. If I knew the end was today would I berate myself for the bathroom not getting cleaned because I had spent the time playing with my child or grandchild? Would I be annoyed with the cross postal worker or the reckless driver who had cut me off in traffic? Would those things matter? No, I think I would recognize their insignificance. I would better see what was important.

It’s all about love, isn’t it? The eating, drinking, building, and planting tend to be distractions. They need not be. They can help to build the kingdom if they are done as led by the Lord Jesus. But if they become ends in themselves we can be caught unawares. The Lord will come at any time. We do not know the hour or the day. We must live always in a state of preparedness, ready to meet Jesus, regardless of where our attention is focused on that day. Every day may we live intentionally, purposefully serving our Lord and our God.

Ponder:

How can I live each day, fulfilling every task as a way to build the kingdom and preparing to meet the Lord?

Pray:

Lord, please help me to keep my eyes on you, remembering each hour that my work is in service to You and that the days of my life are numbered.
