Today's Gospel: Luke 21:1-4

In today's Gospel, Jesus shows us how God is pleased when we are unsparing in our offerings to Him. If we offer of ourselves only from our excess supply, technically that may amount to more in terms of numbers, but it is not nearly as meaningful a sacrifice as someone giving fully and completely from their bottom line.

He said, “I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”

Do we offer Jesus of our whole selves, in terms of time, talent and treasure? I know that I personally sometimes hold back in my offerings to God because I am worried about running out of things. Running out of time, out of energy, and out of money. Granted, Jesus is not asking us to literally give every cent away and not provide for our families and our own needs. What He is asking for is a sacrifice made with intention, with love, with faith and trust in God's mercy and goodness, and with purposeful abandonment to God's Will. He is asking us to be generous, and not simply compliant. This can be offered in the form of needed participation in your parish's Worship Committee when you are tired after a long day and would rather stay home, and in so may other ways. Our generosity can have many forms, and our openness with it brings God only happiness and pleasure.

Ponder:

In what ways can I be more generous with my time, talent and treasure offered back to God and His Church?

Pray:

Lord, help me to be generous in spirit and towards my fellow human beings, always. Guide me in offering of myself in ways that help Your Church and Your people.
