Today's Gospel: Feast of St. Andrew - Matthew 4:18-22

One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother, Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah (which means Christ).” He brought him to Jesus. (John 1: 40-42)

This version of the calling of the first disciples is a little different than the one from today’s reading from the Gospel of Matthew. Although they are mostly similar, the one from John shows the actions of Andrew. I kind of like the one from John better.

I love the way Andrew responded in acknowledging Jesus as the Messiah and rushing to tell his brother all about Jesus. After he tells Simon then the two of them rush off to meet Jesus. Throughout the gospels we see a lot about Simon Peter, we see less of Andrew. I understand why this is the case, but as I have written about before I have a special place in my heart for Andrew. And often compare him to my younger sister and myself, although we were the opposite in that I am the oldest and she the younger. But that is not what I want to look at today.

I love Andrew’s reaction when he realizes Jesus is the Messiah. He rushes to find his brother and share Jesus with him. I think that is how we all should react when we learn about Christ. I should want to race from the safety of our churches and homes to share Jesus with everyone. Andrew didn’t stop and question. Like Mary and many other prophets he accepted and shared. He didn’t hide the news under a barrel. Instead he aided Jesus in the creation of the Church.
May we all adopt an Andrew attitude and share the Messiah with others.

Ponder:

Am I like Andrew, excitedly rushing to share Jesus with the world?

Pray:

St. Andrew the Apostle, please show me how to be like you, excited and anxious to share Jesus our Savior with the world.
