Today's Gospel: Mark 9:2-13

“It is good that we are here!” Have you spoken those words in a moment of retreat? Perhaps you were on a family trip, a reunion dinner with friends, or even alone with a good book and cup of tea. In those moments of precious pause, we are able to see things differently. We can use these moments to rekindle a relationship, process a heavy event in our lives, or discern God’s call.

Today’s Gospel is known as the Transfiguration of Jesus, but it is really Peter, James, and John who need the experience to see differently. Jesus, whether or not He’s dazzling, whether or not He has light shining on Him, and whether or not the Lord is announcing Him as “my beloved Son,” is the same Savior. It is we as humans who need to see things from a different angle, or in a different space, to find clarity in our vision. We must shift our gaze from a worldly vision to a kingdom vision, able to see God’s grace moving throughout our lives.

In those grace-filled moments when we find revelation from our Lord, what happens next? Do we cling to the experience, or do we act on the Truth that we have discovered? We all have a natural tendency to want to build tents and stay in the moment; however, the importance of these moments comes later. What did we make of what was given to us? When the light dissipates, do we still have the ability to walk through our days seeing where God continues to work in our lives? The challenge of this Gospel lies in seeing the grace of our Lord, in whatever form He may appear.

Ponder:

How must I pause so that I can see with clarity the ways the Lord is working in my life today?

Pray:

Dear Lord, bless me with the ability to see You working miracles throughout my day and open my heart to respond to what I see.
