Today's Gospel: Mark 1:40-45

Not so very long ago I found myself in a situation of helplessness, hopeless to change its outcome. It is what it is, and would remain so for the rest of my life.

It felt to me that invisible suffering is all the more difficult because others cannot see the suffering and support you through the trial.

What I am learning is that when we have reached the end of our strength and beg for help, Jesus feels our helplessness and shows mercy. And that mercy may not be a physical healing but a spiritual alignment. To lean all the more into the Holy — and this sounds ludicrous — diminishes hopelessness and encourages helplessness; I am helpless to bear this alone and not hopeless that the situation can be borne.

Ponder:

Hopelessness is like a leprosy that eats away at our thoughts and faith. What are the little (or big!) cells of hopelessness in your life that you want to turn in to helplessness and a reliance with God?

Pray:

Heavenly Father, in the challenges of life, let my ambiguous nature evolve into full and fruitful reliance on You, Who will touch and heal my soul.
