Today's Gospel: Mark 1:14-20
Oftentimes when people are called by God, they experience some hesitation, typically around their unworthiness. How could God call me to do something for Him when I have done X, Y, or Z? The key to understanding and responding to God’s call right now is found in today’s Gospel.
St. Mark’s Gospel is the shortest, and it’s quick. In our Gospel reading today, we have Jesus proclaiming that the Kingdom of God is at hand and calling people to repentance. It is after this proclamation that He then calls some of the Apostles, Simon and Andrew, James and John, to follow Him.
While one event precedes the other, the two can be connected. Repentance helps us respond to the call. Certainly these four future Apostles did things they regretted. These things could have held them back. Repentance is key to their response. Jesus knew their deficiencies and shortcomings, and yet He called. Jesus would spend time with them, forming them and reforming them. Jesus would bring them to a point of repentance, and they would receive forgiveness.
Consider your own spiritual life. The Kingdom of God is at hand, and Jesus needs you and what you can contribute. Repent, believe, and respond to God’s call. Know this: Following God’s call will bring you the greatest peace and fulfillment in your life.
Ponder:
What is God calling you to do right now? What is holding you back from responding to the call? Do things from your past hold you back? If so, how can you move to a point of forgiving yourself and accepting the Lord’s forgiveness?
Pray:
O my Jesus, forgive me for what I have done. I surrender it to You, and I repent of it. Open my heart to Your mercy and grace.
