Today's Gospel: Mark 2:1-12

The reputation of Jesus as the great teacher and healer had spread widely. It was nearly impossible to get through the crowd that had gathered to hear Him. How excited they must have been.

Four men carried a paralytic. I wonder if a woman was involved in the decision to open up the roof. All women are mothers in some way. And a mother will do whatever it takes to help, to heal, to comfort. Perhaps it was the man’s mother or sister or spouse who instructed the men to come in that way. Just a thought.

Jesus’ first response is to forgive the man his sins, knowing full well that the scribes would call such words blasphemy. The man had come for healing but hearing God Himself say that his sins were forgiven must have given him a profound peace.

Jesus first identifies His lordship to the scribes by identifying their thoughts. He then challenges them with the question of whether forgiving sins or healing is easier.

Jesus instructs the paralytic,

“I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home.”

The man does just that, to the astonishment of everyone.

In forgiving the man his sins, Jesus had offered the ultimate in healing and restoration. Do we cherish the gift of forgiveness in our own lives? Do we take advantage of frequent Confession and teach our children its value?

In His kindness and compassion, Jesus also restores the man’s ability to walk. He rewarded the persistence of the loved ones who believed Jesus could and would heal him.

All were astounded, the Gospel tells us. Since doubting scribes were there, we can assume they also were astonished. Jesus has identified His lordship to them. Surely some of them were converted.

Ponder:

Do I appreciate the great healing offered by the forgiveness of sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation?

Pray:

O Jesus, please grant us all the healing we need in body, mind, and spirit. May we surrender to your lordship in every area of our lives.
