Today's Gospel: Mark 3:13-19
In today's Gospel, Jesus called to His side twelve men, specifically chosen from the many from Galilee and Judea who were following Him. Those selected were to be His apostles, and I am sure the twelve were very proud in being chosen.
Jesus even gave a few new names. My favorite was Simon, the first to be called and the first to be renamed. He came, accepting both his new name, Peter, and his future without hesitation because he believed in Jesus. Two brothers, John and James, were even given a nickname! They became known as Boanerges, meaning Sons of Thunder. They had to wonder why they alone were given a nickname, but they, like all the others, trusted Jesus.
In fact, none of the Apostles had a clue what their life was to become, but they trusted Jesus. He knew their weaknesses and still chose them. They in turn were ready to do whatever He said, no questions asked.
Can we say the same? Do we even hear Him when He is calling? Because He does call each one of us. In spite of our weaknesses, we are His disciples. God not only knows our names, He is willing to work with what we have to achieve His will. All we have to do is trust in Him.
My favorite prayer, the Anima Christi, ends with “At the hour of my death, call my name and bid me come to you.” Be ready! Listen for Him calling you today. And then follow Jesus in complete faith until the very end, for we ,too, can do wondrous things in His name.
Ponder:
When God calls, how willing are you to do His will, no matter the consequences?
Pray:
Lord, open my ears that I may hear and understand what You need from me today. Give me the strength to always do Your will and not my own.
