Reflect on Jesus' confrontation with the scribes in Mark 3:22-30 and learn how to defend the truth with logic and knowledge in our daily lives.
Today's Gospel: Mark 3:22-30
The scribes from Jerusalem needed to explain Jesus’ enormous and astonishing power as a great healer and miracle worker lest the people decide that he was the Messiah or God Himself. Such a conclusion would threaten their own position.
The scribes were purportedly seeking to know God. They studied and debated Scripture, and people had great respect for them. Yet, they accused Jesus of being possessed by the devil. The scribes asserted the healing power and miracles were all coming from the power of Satan.
Jesus summons the scribes to confront their accusation. Other blasphemies could be forgiven but not a denial of the Godhead. He had to protect His followers lest they be lost.
Jesus used a firm, logical argument to show the scribes’ position could not be true.
If someone is undermining our efforts to teach the truth to our children or to others, we also intervene, don’t we? We must follow Jesus’ example and, using logic and knowledge, show how certain ideas are necessarily false.
Ponder:
Where might I have the opportunity to instruct the ignorant (a Spiritual Work of Mercy) when I hear falsehoods among friends or acquaintances or in the public sphere?
Pray:
Lord, help me to practice the Spiritual Work of Mercy of instructing the ignorant. Please give me the right words, ideas, and timing. May I always speak in charity.
Pray Together:
Ask God how he wants you to defend the truth then practice how that might work in a conversation.
