Today's Gospel: Mark 3:22-30
When I hear today’s Gospel, my thoughts immediately turn to current events and how divided we are right now. Evil attacks our families, seducing through a morality-blurring culture.
Jesus’ words are a warning that while our sins may be forgiven, we must be careful not to sin against or disrespect the Holy Spirit. What does that mean, to sin against the Holy Spirit? It is a deliberate refusal of God's mercy, a persistent rejection of the Holy Spirit that has eternal consequences. (CCC 1864)
Today we celebrate the feast of St. Angela Merici. When she was orphaned at the age of ten, an uncle welcomed her into his home. For ten years, she lived a quiet, devout life, returning to her hometown after her uncle died. Here she discovered that local girls lived in uneducated ignorance, without any hope for their future. Young Angela could have resigned herself to the way it was, but this future saint responded to the call of the Holy Spirit to do something. She opened her home to them and taught them faith, prayer, and the sacramental life.
Mothers, we are also called to teach our children to know God, love God, and serve Him so that as they go out into the world, they’ll have a strong foundation of faith. The world will tempt them. They may sin or even stray away from the Church, yet with hope that springs from knowledge, our children’s hearts will not reject God and the Holy Spirit. This is the way we will combat evil, by serving, educating, praising, praying, trusting, and surrendering as modeled by St. Angela Merici throughout her life.
Ponder:
Reflect on small ways you can strengthen your children’s faith through education, prayer, and the sacramental life.
Pray:
Come Holy Spirit, guide us in teaching our children the ways of the Lord so that the knowledge and faith we pass on will strengthen them and give them hope for the future.
