Today's Gospel: Luke 2:22-40

There are so many people mentioned in the Gospels that we don’t know much about. Anna, the prophetess, is one of them. We know that she was old, had spent much more of her life widowed than married, and never left the temple. She spent her days and nights in prayer and fasting—and she was rewarded by meeting the infant Son of God.

As mothers, we can’t exactly pray and fast all day and all night, at least not the way Saint Anna did. But we can still meet the Son of God, because he’s waiting for us where we are. Whether it’s making lunch, working, or playing with our children during the day or rocking and feeding our babies at night, Jesus is there. We can make each act a prayer—and, in this way, we can spend our days and nights worshiping the Lord.

Saint Frances of Rome famously said that sometimes, the married woman must “leave God at the altar to find Him in her housekeeping,” and Saint Teresa of Avila wrote that “God walks among the pots and the pans.” It can be frustrating when the baby cries in the middle of the daily readings, when the kids disrupt the family Rosary, or when we have to leave the pew with a fussy toddler during Mass. But God is in the midst of our busy lives, and as long as we dedicate our time to Him—however we’re filling it—we are worshiping Him day and night, too.

Ponder:

How do you find God “among the pots and the pans” when you must leave Him at the altar?

Pray:

Lord, may I worship You throughout my daily routine. May my every act, no matter how mundane, glorify You.
