Today's Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20
“And, behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
When my daughter started walking, she loved to toddle around the house after me. I had a little shadow—one that grabbed my legs while I was trying to cook, not wanting to leave me or be left by me. Challenging? Yes. Annoying? Sometimes. A delightful constant reminder of how much I was loved? Absolutely.
She doesn’t want me to leave her because I am comfort. I am love. I am home.
If separation from a human mother is so painful for a toddler, imagine how separation from Jesus must have felt for the apostles! What a comfort Jesus’s parting words must have been—a challenging task, yes (“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations”), but also an expression of great love, a reminder that while He was bodily ascending to heaven, His Spirit would never leave.
We can take this same comfort. Every time I read this passage, it feels like a hug from Jesus—a reminder that He is with me, always. And He’s with you, too.
Ponder:
What evidence can you see in your life that Jesus is always with you?
Pray:
Jesus, please help me feel Your comforting presence in my darkest moments.
