Today's Gospel: Luke 2:22-40

“When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord . . . and to offer the sacrifice . . . ” Luke 2:22-23

Today's Gospel takes place forty days after Christmas. Known as the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, we recall this to be one of the joyful mysteries of the Rosary.

And yet, Simeon’s prophecy in the midst of this joyous occasion is also counted among Mary’s seven sorrows.

“Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted - and you yourself a sword will pierce - so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” Luke 2:34-35

Here we note that Mary, although highly favored and blessed among women, did not live an easy life. She experienced life’s highs and lows, just like we do. She felt the joys and sorrows that ebb and flow throughout this earthly journey. And yet, no matter how much sorrow she endured, she never wavered in her faith, and she maintained a peace of heart that could not be shaken.

Moreover, Mary kept her joy in the midst of suffering, which is why Our Lady of Sorrows is the cause of our joy, too.

Today’s Gospel reminds us that joy follows mourning, healing comes from brokenness, and life comes after death. The sorrow and suffering we experience with Christ does not need to lead to despair. We can experience sorrow and, at the same time, remain hopeful, because God always keeps His word. He promises new life, and He fulfills that promise through the sorrow and pain of the cross.

And since Mary knows and understands so much about the human experience, she will keep us company when waves of sorrow come crashing down or when agonizing emotion overpowers us. She will guide us and intercede for us through it all.

Ponder:

The Presentation of Our Lord was joyful and sorrowful for Mary. And no matter what came her way, she remained graceful and faith-filled. How does her example help you look at the joys and sorrows in your own life differently?

Pray:

Our Lady of Sorrows, I want to know you better, because I want to learn how to love the Lord like you love Him. Not just in joyful and peaceful times, but also when pain, suffering, disappointment, and heartache come my way.
