Reflect on the importance of surrendering to God's will and trusting His plan for us, inspired by today's Gospel and the story of a little girl's cherished pearls.

Today's Gospel: Mark 7:1-13

There is a story about a little girl who had a cherished necklace of plastic pearls. She dearly loved them. One night, as her father tucked her into bed, he asked her to give him the pearls. She just could not. Time went by, he asked her again and again, and finally, one night, she said, “Daddy, I love you more than the pearls. These are for you.” After she handed over her plastic pearls, her father exchanged them for a necklace of real pearls.

Sometimes we do this with God. We hang on to the way things have always been done. We don’t want to let go of our ways or the way we want things done. We want to be right and may even put God’s word aside. However, sometimes we need to be like that littler girl. We need to love the Father and trust that what He has for us is far greater.

In the Collect for today’s Feast of St. Scholastica, we hear, “following her example, we may serve you with pure love and happily receive what comes from loving you.” May it remind us that our heavenly Father does not have plastic beads waiting for us, He is offering a strand of beautiful pearls.

Ponder:

Is there something you are holding onto out of fear that what the Father wants to give will be less than you'd like?

Pray:

Help me surrender, Lord. Help me to not be afraid to let go of my traditions and wants and to reach out for the authentic goodness You have for me.

Pray Together:

Celebrate your feasts and saints with Feast Day Fudge. Mix 16 oz. of chocolate frosting with 12 oz. melted semi-sweet chocolate chips, pour into a greased pan and cool. You'll be looking for more saints to celebrate.
